What is an Egress Window?
Egress windows are simply windows large enough from which you can enter or exit. State and local building codes require certain rooms in your home – usually bedrooms, home offices, or finished basements – to have an egress window. While specific requirements vary by location, an egress window must be large enough for an adult to climb out, or for emergency personnel to climb in. Regulations also dictate how close the windowsill must be to the floor, to allow children to safely exit. These rules are in place to protect you and your family from fires or other disasters in the home.
